The single best safety tip for cycling is ALWAYS WEAR YOUR HELMET! Head injuries account for 60% of all cycling deaths in the U.S. every year. There is no doubt that many of these deaths could have been avoided if everyone wore a helmet while cycling. Regardless of the laws in your state/city, you should always wear a helmet.
Virginia Beach Helmet Law (Reference City Code: 7-50): Children 14 years old and younger are required to wear a helmet when riding a bicycle.
Although it is not required, it is highly recommended that all cyclists wear helmets.
